Fellowship meeting in Vienna
On 17 October 2008, a Fellowship meeting takes place in Vienna.
We meet around 18:00 in the Library Room at the Metalab, Rathausstraße 6,
first district. The discussions will start at 19:00.
Items on the agenda include our pages in the Fellowship wiki, our
advocacy project, and some small organisational things. As always,
the meeting is ended with a nice chat over a beer.
As usual, this invitation addresses to all people interested in FSFE or
Free Software. We are looking forward to many attendants!

From 21. October to 24. October the SYSTEMS will take place in Munich,
Germany. SYSTEMS is a professional business-to-business exhibition for
the ICT market and addresses business and technical decision-makers in
commercial enterprises and the public sector.
For the first time FSFE will be present with a booth.

FSCONS 2008, Gothenburg, Sweden
For 2008, FSCONS is a collaboration of FSFE, Creative Commons,
and Wikimedia Sweden. There will be three tracks (Free
Culture, Free Software, Free Content), each lead by one of the
main organisers. Topics will range from modern kernel design
over citizen journalism all the way across to licensing in the
21st century.

Fellowship meeting in Weingarten, Germany
Fellow Christof Raber will host a Fellowship meeting at Weltehof,
Welte 1, 88250 Weingarten on Tuesday the 28th of October at 19:00.
All Fellows and Free Software supporters nearby are invited to
attend. It will be a good chance to get to know each other in
person, discuss all Free Software and FSFE related topics and to
generally have a good time.

NLUUG Autumn Conference and CELF Embedded Linux Conference Europe, Ede, Netherlands
The FSFE will be attending the NLUUG Autumn Conference on Thursday 6th November. This year's theme is 'mobility'. Feel free to come to our booth and ask about Free Software!
Shane Coughlan, Freedom Task Force coordinator at FSFE, will also deliver talk entitled 'The strategic implementation of free software in business' at the CELF Embedded Linux Conference Europe 2008 at the same location on the following day, Friday 7th November.
The successful implementation of Free Software requires an understanding of the best policy and processes applicable to its context. Shane will discuss how FSFE's legal project and its European Legal Network have engaged with this issue by producing generic market knowledge for supply and purchasing contracts, work flow documents and deployment methodology.
The location for both conferences is Hotel en Congrescentrum De Reehorst, Ede, Netherlands.

demonstration starts the booth will be reestablished at the
Brandenburger Tor.

The GNU-project is turning 25 on the 27th of September. Therefore we
will pop the corks at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. We will meet at

Reach the people - Software Freedom Day, Berlin, Germany
On Saturday 20. September starting at 14:00 FFII and FSFE's Fellowship
group from Berlin will have barbecue and an information booth. At the
booth we will explain what Free Software is and why it is important for
society. This event should give beginners a chance to get in contact
with Free Software, GNU/Linux and the involved groups. Please bring

Starting at 8pm, Vienna's Fellows celebrate the annual "Software Freedom Day" in a Pub called Pint Pub in Vienna.

Fellowship's stand at the Braderie de Lille, Lille (France)
The so-called "Braderie de Lille" (Lille's flea market) is a big outside-event which has taken place every year since the 12th century during the first week-end of september. chtinux, a Linux User Group which is installed around there, has proposed to the Fellowship to take part in the Braderie. The FSFE, and especially the Fellowship's stand, will get much visibility, since millions of people of numerous nations take a walk on Lille's streets. Come to discover this beautiful city and to eat some Braderie's culinary specialities like clams ! And above all, come in order to support the Fellowship !
Fellowship's stand will be situated on Place du Vieux Marché aux chevaux.

The Vienna Fellowship Group invites to a speech of Shane Martin Coughlan
about "The Professionalisation of Free Software. Where we are going next."

'How SELF helped building structures for freedom' speech at FKFT
SELF has contributed on various levels to freedom in software and
education. The work of the SELF Legal Experts Group (LEG) has helped
to evolve a better understanding of Open Standards and provided a
reference line for free educational materials. The coordinator of the
SELF LEG, FSFE president Georg Greve, will provide an insight on how
SELF has helped advance the state of the art, and how the work done in
the SELF consortium will provide lasting benefit to the Free Software
community.

'Licences that support freedom' speech at FKFT
Shane will talk about the types of licence that provide and
protect freedoms of use, study, sharing and improvement in both
technology and educational text. He will review the main challenges
that platforms like SELF may encounter from the legal point of view and
what kind of mechanisms help support reliable legal infrastructure. He
will also discuss the work of FSFE's Freedom Task Force in providing
education and support services relating to legal support for Free Software in Europe.

Fellowship barbecue with the FFII in Berlin
The local Fellowship group in Berlin will have a joined barbecue with the FFII on the 10th of July.
The meeting will start at 7:30pm in FFII office, which is located at the Malmöer Straße 6 close to Bornholmer Straße.

Social event in Zürich - meet the FSFE!
This year's General Assembly of FSFE takes place in Zurich, and as usual,
there will be a social event where the members of the General Assembly
meet Fellows and other local Free Software supporters.
Around 18:20 the crowd will leave from the FSFE office at
Sumatrastrasse 25
and walk through the old town in direction to Bellview.
At 19:00 we will catch a
ferry
from
Zurich Burkiplatz.
At 19:47 the ferry will arrive in Erlenbach where -- due to the weather
conditions -- we will continue the evening with a nice dinner at the
Restaurant Malabar Garden in Kuesnacht
where we expect to be until at least 23:00.

Speech "Free Software - Technique, Politics, Economy", Berlin, Germany
On Saturday 31th May 14-15 pm, Matthias Kirschner will give a speech at Linuxtag in Berlin. The talk is about the importance of the four freedoms to use, study, share and improve software and their influence in politics and economy. Target audience are beginners, or people who want to get some ideas how to explain this topic to beginners. The speech takes place at the BusinessForum (EG) and will be held in German.

European Licensing and Legal Workshop
FSFE's Freedom Task Force will host the first European Licensing and Legal Workshop for Free Software on Friday the 11th of April in Amsterdam,
The Netherlands. The venue for this meeting is the InterContinental Amstel Hotel. The event is targeted towards large projects and medium to
large enterprises wishing to discuss their existing licence compliance processes. Parties attending are expected to contribute to issues
ranging from process development through to optimising purchasing contract language for the benefit of the European Free Software community.
This workshop has limited space available and therefore attendance is by invitation only. Projects and companies interested in attending this

Friday, 29 March, the first Fellowship meeting in Augsburg will take
place.
We are going to meet in the "Thing" bar, Vorderer Lech 45, 86150
Augsburg, right after the GNU/Linux infoday Augsburg. We expect to be
there around 18:30.
Anybody who does not know Augsburg very well or is at the GNU/Linux

The Duesseldorf Fellowship group proudly announces its next meeting on

Colloquium on Free Software and science
On Thursday June 7, 2007 at 3:30 pm in the V G Kulkarni Auditorium at
Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) in Mumbai, India, Georg
Greve gives a talk about Free Software and science.
Free Software and science share common roots, and benefit society in
several similar ways. In his talk, Mr Greve will explain the concept of
Free Software and how it relates to maintaining our scientific basis as a
society. As a practical example of this collaboration, the talk will give
a brief introduction of the Science, Education and Learning in Freedom
project, in which the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, Tata
Institute of Fundamental Research plays a crucial role. The talk will
close with an overview of how all of this relates to the global political
trends of knowledge monopolisation, and the Access to Knowledge
initiative.

eLiberatica Conference in Braşov
The eLiberatica Conference is the most important romanian event
concerning Free Software. It will be held on the 18th and the 19th
of May, in Braşov, Romania, and is organized by ROSI, a romanian
assocition advocating Free Software, and by Agora Media, a romanian
media group. eLiberatica's purpose is to unify pomotion of Free
Software throughout Romania, and encouraging its adoption by business
through grassroots organization. The conference therefore addresses

E' il primo di una serie di incontri annuali per favorire la diffusione

e filosofici.
Vuole inoltre essere un punto di incontro di tutti i soggetti che sono

ed appassionati, per conoscersi e avviare collaborazioni e progetti.
Obiettivo degli organizzatori e' proporre la prima Conferenza Scientifica

La conferenza e' organizzata dal Centro di Ricerca su Tecnologia ed
Innovazione Hacklab Cosenza e dalla Free Software Foundation Europe,

On April 27th-29th 2007, the weekend of World "Intellectual Property Day", the Yale Information Society Project will hold its Second Annual Access to Knowledge (A2K) Conference. This A2K conference program focuses on mobilizing Industry, Civil Society, Governments and Technologists, around human rights, human development and the public interest in the domain of innovation and information policy, as well as understanding the theoretical underpinnings of access to knowledge issues. Evening of freedom in digital society
On April 4th, 18:00 pm, Georg Greve and Jonas Oberg will give three
public talks. Georg will present the FSFE, and Free Software issues
in e-government, and Jonas will talk about the SELF project. This
event will take place in Belgrade, it will also be an opportunity
for the Free Software community in Serbia to meet, with people also
coming from Macedonia and Croatia.

GPLv3: Improving a Great Licence
On Sunday April 1st, at 17h00, in Brussels, Richard Stallman
will present the current status of the global project to update
Free Software's keystone licence: the GNU GPL. This talk will
be Stallman's first since the release of discussion draft 3 -
the draft crafted to block patent deals such as that of
Novell+Microsoft. This draft has also been simplified, and the
DRM (Digital Restrictions Management) and tivoisation clauses
have also been altered significantly.

During the second leg of the SELF project, Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, TIFR will organise the second BOARD meeting in Mumbai, India.

The 5th international conference on GPLv3 will be a 2-day event
held in Japan on November 21st and 22nd. Organised by Free
Software Initiative Japan, this event will host experts and

Il Grand Jury della Corte Europea di giustizia è pronto per l'attesa udienza
della causa antitrust contro Microsoft, che avrà luogo nella Grande Salle

Access to Knowledge Conference, Yale Law School, USA
Alla prima conferenza internazionale su Access to Knowledge, che si terrà
alla Yale Law School, Karsten Gerloff modererà una tavola rotonda dal
titolo "Licensing Frameworks for Access to Knowledge". Lo scopo della
conferenza è quello di sviluppare un quadro per analizzare i possibili
effetti distorsivi delle politiche pubbliche basate esclusivamente sul
diritto d'autore e sui brevetti. I partecipanti discuteranno sulle
modalità alternative per sostenere l'accesso alla conoscenza in un
ambiente digitale e connesso.

7° Free Software Forum, Porto Alegre, Brasile
Quest'anno la 7^a edizione del Free Software Forum avrà luogo a
Porto Alegre, Brasile, ospitando anche la seconda conferenza
internazionale su GPLv3. La FSFE sarà rappresentata dal proprio
presidente, Georg Greve, e dal proprio rappresentante a Bruxelles,
Ciaran O'Riordan. Entrambi terranno degli interventi alla
conferenza su GPLv3 e parteciperanno alle attività del FISL:
Greve terrà uno degli interventi di apertura, dal titolo "Free
Software - Social Movement or Technological Revolution?", e Ciaran
O'Riordan parlerà delle iniziative per fermare i brevetti software.
Entrambi lavoreranno insieme alla FSF Latin America,
organizzazione sorella della FSFE, e incontreranno la comunità
locale del software libero per rafforzare la rete internazionale
del software libero.

Brevetti software, copyright e GPLv3
Ciaran O'Riordan e Gareth Bowker parleranno a Londra a
proposito delle attività della FSFE per proteggere la libertà del
software da possibili interventi legislativi dannosi, come quelli
legati alla brevettabilità del software o alle distorsioni del
diritto d'autore. O'Riordan presenterà anche la GPLv3 e il suo
processo consultivo pubblico che durerà un anno. Entrambi

Il 18 Marzo Richard Stallman presenterà a Torino il futuro del Software
Libero, introducendo al pubblico italiano il processo di aggiornamento
della GNU General Public License ("la GPL") che oggi protegge le libertà
di 100 milioni di utenti di software nel mondo ed è la licenza per il
Software Libero più usata al mondo.

On 4 November, starting at 18:00, a Fellowship meeting will take place in
the "Käuzchen" in Vienna, Gardegasse 8. Karin Kosina and Reinhard Müller
will inform about the work of the FSFE and discuss with interested

The Swedish Internet infrastructure foundation is organising the
conference Internetdagarna 2005 at the Clarion Hotel in Stockholm,
Sweden, between the 24th and 25th of october. Several issues will
be discussed during the conference, including a discussion on Sweden's
IT policy and the dangers of a digital divide. FSF Europe's Jonas Öberg

Dalle 15:30, dopo una
manifestazione in strada contro i brevetti sul software, FSFE organizzerà
un Freedom Party per celebrare la libertà digitale come parte della sua
campagna di Fellowship. Il luogo di ritrovo non
è stato ancora stabilito, ma sarà vicino a piazza de Meeus, dove termina il
corteo. Piazza de Meeus è una piazza erbosa che sta su entrambi i lati di Rue
de Luxembourg, a metà strada tra il Parlamento Europeo e la stazione della
metropolitana Trone.

Riunione WIPO sull'agenda per lo sviluppo
Dal 12 al 15 aprile, la FSFE parteciperà alla riunione
intergovernativa inter-sessione dell'Organizzazione Mondiale della
Proprietà Intellettuale (WIPO) a Ginevra. Visto che sono stati invitati
a partecipare solo gli osservatori permanenti, molte organizzazioni
della società civile non saranno ammesse a questa riunione di importanza
critica per gli sviluppi futuri del WIPO. La delegazione della FSFE
è per ora composta da Georg Greve, Karsten Gerloff e Volker Grassmuck;
insieme ad altri esponenti della società civile, essa cercherà di riorientare
l'azione del WIPO verso l'aumento della ricchezza intellettuale e la
giusta considerazione dei temi legati al software libero.
